PART II

SALVATION

Twenty-Two

Daisy

Creeping out of the royal tent, I squinted into the morning light. A light fog laid over the camp, like a pastel cloud kissing the ground. Movement from the cooks’ quarters caught my eye, and I ventured toward them with a knot in my gut.

“Good morning,” I whispered.

“Morning, ma’am. Would you like some coffee?”

“Yes, please. And thank you,” I rushed to add, feeling oddly emotional, like this would be the last nice thing anyone would ever do for me.

All last night I contemplated how this would unfold, and I thought if I remained calm and notified the General that Lily had gone for a walk early this morning and hadn’t returned, it would play out better than if I ran from the tent crying and screaming. In fact, Bennett may be headed back with Lily right now, so causing an uproar seemed like an irresponsible thing to do.

“Could you please tell me where the General’s quarters are?” I asked the cook, then took a sip of hot coffee to fortify my nerves, letting it burn all the way down my throat.

“Just over there, ma’am.” He pointed to a meager tent mixed in with the others, sitting just a little further back.

“Thank you.” I took two steps forward, then paused to savor another sip of coffee. Tilting my head to the sky, I suddenly appreciated the crisp mountain air as it stung my cheeks. It reminded me I was alive. Wild and free. I wondered if that was why Lily loved it so much.

She claimed she needed a break, but I hadn’t realized how badly she meant it. The thought of being relegated to a life of servitude had to be overwhelming, especially when that life was all so strange and new.

We’d spent our whole lives protecting the portal back home, but with it being dormant until this year, we mostly lived like normal girls and women—well, as close to normal as growing up a witch could be. Living amongst the fae, in their world, and being immediately thrust into the role of their Queen… Yeah, I was surprised Lily hadn’t run away before now.

My reminiscing and pondering ended abruptly as soon as the General stepped out of his tent. He met my eye across the camp and immediately headed straight for me.

“Ma’am, is something wrong? Where is your guard?” He lifted his eyes to survey the camp beyond me.

Swallowing hard, I shared the story I’d rehearsed in my head. “Good morning, General. I believe the guard is with Lily. She wasn’t in our tent this morning when I woke, so I assume she went for a walk.”

The General’s eyes widened. “What? No. None of my guards would have allowed that. Not here. Please, let me accompany you back to your quarters.”

Setting my coffee cup aside, the General rushed me through the snow and back to my tent. Once inside, he took a quick look around, obviously searching for anything amiss. “You said she was gone when you woke?”

“Yes, sir.”

“But she was here when you went to bed?”

“Yes,” I lied.
